viscosity_25033 It stopped surprised me a decade ago that Texas Tech show up to win every time they play my Aggies.  They just care more about winning that game than we do.  For some reason, the Twelfth Man appears to believe that by ignoring the Red Raiders 364 days a year our first and most sacred rivalry with Texas (“t.u.”) won’t be disturbed.

Now, I know that I’m a bit biased seeing that I grew up in Lubbock and that I now live in “Raider Country”, but maybe it is time to admit that Texas Tech may actually be our closest rival.  True, true, the Aggie War Hymn does call for us to “saw varsity’s horns off” (“Varsity” is Bevo for those not in the know), and in “old army” days Texas Tech was never enough of a threat to consider them a rival.  I realize that we Aggies don’t like to change our precious traditions, but maybe in light of the lack of sportsmanship of the Raiders we should reconsider.

Saturday’s game was heartbreaking.  My Aggies never quit, they fought till the end, and that is what it means to be an Aggie.  But alas, the “clock ran out of time” before coach Sherman could turn it around (*wink*), and t.t.u. won the game.

Now, losing in Kyle Field should never feel normal, but taking a stinging loss by the hand the Red Raiders is beginning to feel familiar.

At the risk of sounding like a sore loser I’ll say this, it’s not the loss that has me upset, it’s Mike Leach’s utter lack of sportsmanship. ESPN’s Tim Keown hits it on the head:

With 24 seconds left, Leach called for a replay-review on a play that he thought resulted in a touchdown. The review didn’t agree, so Tech ran another play and Harrell ran into the end zone, ball held overhead, the taunting, conquering hero.

So Tech wins 43-25 and everybody who questions Leach publicly couches it by saying or writing, “That’s just the way Leach is.” Well, he shouldn’t be that way. He’s better than that. Being consistent is no excuse for being classless and inconsiderate. It’s instructive to note the announcers on the game barely addressed the issue, either because they’re afraid of alienating Leach and Tech or because we’re so numb to displays of crappy sportsmanship that it didn’t even occur to them.

It’s time to change the tone around Aggieland.  We cannot let our team to be out motivated by the Red Raiders every year.  On January 1st, every year, they open their new calendar and circle the day their team will meet the Aggies.  They can no longer be allowed to care more about winning that game than us.  We must treat them as an equal (not a pesky younger brother from a remote place), but a true Big XII powerhouse worthy of spending some time and energy to defeat.

And here is a bone-chilling fact: the all time score between our two schools is close to being tied.  After Saturday’s game, after 66 meetings, the Aggies only lead that match-up by two games (34-32-1).  TWO GAMES!

If it takes inventing a new tradition or digging around for some Southwest Conference era yell.  Anything to fight and win against Texas Tech.  Anything!

Texas Route 207

Here are some photos from my drive toward Abilene yesterday.  The trip was cancelled because the matter I was traveling to attend to was settled during my drive, o well, I got some great photos along the way.

The Microsoft House

I sincerely hope that some of these toys end up in a house I live in.  So very, very cool.

The Praying Mantis

I took this photo from my living room the other morning. These little guys were always my favorite as a kid.

Sorry the photos are so blurry, I was shooting them through a screen and didn’t take enough time to set up my focus properly.

An Earth Day Link

Yesterday was Earth Day, a holiday with no formal event associated with it.  Christmas has gift giving, Easter has egg hunting, 4th of July has fireworks, but Earth Day only seems to spark documentaries and controversy.

Well, if you want do something for Earth Day, how about this:  Minimize the amount of junk mail you receive at your home by signing up for Greendimes.com

The general idea of Greendimes.com is a great one, more important than recycling by my measure (eliminate the paper before it is wasted rather than recycling it later).

It may not be an annual ritual (like eating BBQ on Memorial Day), but maybe if we do something proactive on Earth Day every year, we will eventually develop a bit more respect for this little planet we live upon.

The following is an email I sent to a new friend whom I know from a church Whitney and I visited this morning.  I am uploading it here because the link to Dr. Piper’s messages and the description of them may be of benefit to many of you out there.

* * *

This morning at Hillside you asked that I pass along a link to John Piper’s messages.

Dr. Piper’s website is DesiringGod.org. His website is loaded with resources for growth and study in God’s word, so much so that you may need a bit of guidance to get started.

The first message which I heard him preach was his most famous, namely “Desiring God”. This is the message which you heard me mention this morning when speaking with [our bible study leader]. The central thesis of this message is that, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”.

If the theory seems a bit provocative or heretical, it is because it was designed to sound that way. If you’re truly concerned about his teachings, you should know that Dr. Piper is a Baptist minister and is widely admired among evangelicals (whatever comfort those qualifications are worth to you).

Nonetheless, I recommend that you listen to the Desiring God messages before diving into his less revolutionary stuff. Since he is asked to present it so frequently, there are dozens of recordings on this topic. Currently, it appears that his website is directing interested listeners to these MP3 downloads. A manuscript and outline of these messages can be found there as well.

Let me know what you think about the topic. Like I mentioned this morning these messages have gotten me through many a difficult place in life, so I hope they’ll be just as meaningful to you as well.

Whitney and I just heard “Get Me Some” by The Waifs on XM 45 and we liked it.  Neither of us had been exposed to The Waifs, but a quick search on Amazon shows that they’ve been around for a long time.  How did we miss them?

Anyway, if you want to listen to a little sample of their song, Amazon has a sample.  Otherwise, here are a few of the song’s lyrics:

all hopes and dreams
no money no means
no permanent address
you got holes in your shoes,
holes in your pockets
and your heart in a mess
and who you gonna blame now
that everything has come undone
you had to go and get you some
you’re still singing…

i’m free, i’m free
when the sun shines down on me

So, after a much contemplation, I’ve decided to abandon the “Bible Wiki” project.

I do so not because I think it useless, but because I came across YouVersion, which does everything I hoped to accomplish with my personal project.  The main difference YouVersion and my project is that YouVersion is much, much better at sharing insights with others.

If you are a regular bible reader and need a place to record your notes, this is the place for you!  I can’t tell you how excited I am about it.

The Sixties

FYI — Tommy Nelson announced the beginning of a series on the 1960’s next week at Denton Bible Church

This might be a good time to sign up for his pod cast.

… or alternatively, go to this website to get some idea where the heck the Amorites lived. This site is neat!
